What you’ll be doing

Although perhaps better known for our veg, Riverford has its own butchery and delivers organic meat to homes across the country. Riverford meat is organic, British, meticulously sourced, properly hung and carefully butchered for the very best quality and flavour. We have seen continuing growth in our meat sales and are looking for a butcher to join our busy team as a Primal Butcher.

Ideally, you will have strong interest in butchery and really want to develop your skills. You will

already have good butchery skills and have a genuine interest in food. Our meat is locally sourced and organic, giving you a great opportunity to work with a quality product in a company that takes pride in the skills of its butchers and in providing customers with the best meat possible. If you are ambitious there is fantastic scope for career progression.

This is a permanent contract, 39 hours a week usually Sunday to Thursday. Typically starting at 6.30am until 2.45pm. You’ll need to be flexible to work overtime during busy periods e.g. in the run up to Christmas were 5am starts are required. This role is based at The Butchery, Dean Court, Lower Dean, Buckfastleigh, TQ11 0LT.

Your responsibilities

Work with the butchery team to complete the daily works order to a high standard, ensuring that

quality and pace are maintained. Daily work will involve the following:

– Breaking down carcasses of beef, pork and lambs.

– De-boning and trimming to spec.

– Cut into primal cuts.

– Demonstrate a good understanding of yield and portion control so that we are not creating unnecessary waste and making the most out of each cut of meat

– Packing of meat to Company standards

– Show an understanding of who Riverford’s customers are and their expectations; we are producing a high-quality product and our customers expect the best.

– It is essential that you take a high level of individual responsibility regarding all health and safety regulations and systems, maintaining a high level of safety, hygiene and housekeeping. This includes wearing correct clothing, maintaining a clean working environment and maintaining equipment

– Attend any workshops and training as requested to develop your skills but also take a proactive approach to progress within the trade by taking every opportunity to learn more about butchery and the systems required to run an efficient and successful meat operation.

– Assist in other areas of the business as required

Skills & experience

– Experience in a carcass boning role is essential

– Knowledge of H.A.C.C.P. and M.H.S. systems

– Must be comfortable working in a cold environment

– You must be able to lift and manoeuvre

– You should have good communication skills and be able to speak and understand English to a level that enables you to comprehend instructions and the daily requirements of the role
