First Step Trust (FST) is a charity that provides work experience, training, qualifications and employment opportunities for people (workforce members)excluded from working life because of mental health problems or other disadvantages in secure and community settings. The FST project is based in the new NHS medium secure hospital of Rowan View and provides a range of catering, office and retail work opportunities for adult men and women within the secure unit and other locations. Specific to this role, FST operates the Rowan View on-site café 5 days a week where it caters for both the staff and patients on site, providing freshly cooked, healthy food. FST uses this work section to train it’s workforce in catering and support them to build the skills and confidence that they will need to be able to find salaried employment when they move on from Rowan View in the future.

First Step Trust is currently recruiting for a Catering Assistant to support the Café Manager in the day the day running of all aspects of the café.

The successful candidate will be required to have experience in a catering setting and will be expected to carry out their tasks to a high standard whilst supporting the recovery of workforce members by providing practical “on the job” training.

In practice this will mean working alongside the workforce as equals and involving them in all aspects of the work including food preparation and service, cash handling, cleaning, health & safety, training and purchasing of materials all within established FST policies and procedures.

The café serves a varied menu of sandwiches, paninis, soups and salads. This is a hands on role and requires a positive, versatile and can do approach in all areas.

This role would suit someone with some experience of working within the catering industry who is looking to develop their skills in a rewarding yet challenging role.

This role is a fixed term 1 year contract

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications and Experience

At least 1 years experience of working in a catering environment,

A minimum of Level 2 Food Safety qualification

Experience of supervising staff is preferred though not essential

Experience of working within a secure setting is preferred though not essential

Experience of purchasing, pricing or dealing with suppliers is preferred but not essential

Demonstrable experience of H&S in the workplace, particularly in catering environments.

Full driving license held for a minimum of 1 year

The successful candidate will be subject to an enhanced DBS check

Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds skills and experience

Ability to adhere to all security protocols in put in place by First Step Trust and NHS Merseycare.

Good customer service skills with a sound understanding of the importance of good customer relations.

Excellent initiative, ability to prioritise work and resolve problems/issues.

Good organisation and administrative skills.

A good working knowledge of common office software packages including; ability to work with spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel, a good understanding and experience of using the Internet, e-mail and word documents.

Good written and verbal communication skills and knowledge of H&S in the workplace
