Working Hours

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am to 2.30pm term time only (including INSETS) plus 3 days at the start and end of the term, a total of 37 weeks per year, although some flexibility will be required at busy times. At certain times of the year there are evening events which the Catering Assistant may be required to help with.

Residential lettings during the school holidays; there is a regular 3-day shift during the Easter holidays and a further 5-day shift that may be required during the summer holidays.

Main duties

Assist with the preparation of school meals

Prepare morning and afternoon snacks for the whole school

Prepare fresh fruit pots for lunch and supper.

Prepare sandwiches for After-school clubs, match tea’s, meetings

Assist Head Chef in making sure food is out on time and ready to serve

Making sure that methods of food preparation and presentation are to the schools’ standards and allergens and dietary requirements are carefully followed.

Wash down work station after every use.

Wash down trolleys after every use.

Keep floors clean and slip free

Help clear down servery (breakfast, lunch)

Ensure that all areas under your control are left clean and tidy at all times but especially at the end of your shift

Ensure any spillages or breakages that could constitute a risk to health and safety are cleared up and made safe straight away

Be aware of children’s allergies

Comply with all relevant H&S policies, e.g. manual handling, food hygiene, COSHH, etc.

Ensure any hazardous substances (including kitchen knives, cleaning chemicals/materials, oven lighters, etc.) are stored safely and appropriately and are only accessible to appropriate members of staff

Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) should be used whenever relevant and will be provided by the school

Be vigilant at all times with respect to risks to the health and safety of those using the school site and how such risks can be minimised. Inform the Head Chef/Dining room supervisor of any H&S hazards identified

Ensure a high standard of personal and general cleanliness and hygiene and maintain a professional appearance

Essential

Able to work in a clean, tidy and professional manner.

Must behave and dress in a manner appropriate to the presence of young children.

Willingness to undertake further training and learn new skills.

Basic general education including reasonable literacy and numeracy.

DESIRABLE

Level 2 food safety certificate

Previous experience of working in a catering environment

Previous experience of working in a school environment
