ABOUT THE ROLE.
At our potato business in Montrose, Scotland, we grow seed potatoes.
To get the best quality and taste, we use 13 different varieties from over 60 specialist seed potato growers throughout the UK. As the UK’s largest purchaser of British potatoes, McCain buys approximately 15% of the annual potato crop. We’ve also built close links with over 250 potato growers across the UK.
We’re looking for someone to come and join our Montrose team, working closely with growers, to deliver their contractual commitments of the right quality potatoes at the right time. You will support our Seed Operations Manager and Seed Production Manager in the delivery of strategic priorities, which include driving yield through grower selection and performance review / improvement programmes. Effectively leading and improving the supply chain to meet required levels of performance whilst providing technical agronomy advice throughout the seed supply chain.
ABOUT YOU.
We’re looking for a natural communicator – someone who can build strong and effective relationships with our seed potato growers and lives by our values (Family. Authentic. Quality. Trusted). A seed potato enthusiast, you’ll thrive in a demanding and changing environment and have no hesitation in rolling up your sleeves and getting your hands dirty. We want someone who immerses themselves in the operation, getting right under the skin and always seeking out ways to keep improving & winning.
You will also have:
• Technical experience of seed potato growing (or experience with other produce) with knowledge of the legislative requirements of growing and marketing of seed potatoes (essential)
• Ability to build and maintain relationships at all levels, with our growers and within the business (essential)
• A degree (BSc or equivalent) in agriculture, horticulture, biology, crop science or environmental science (desirable)
• Strong computer skills including word, excel and an understanding of windows based software programmes (essential)
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to thrive in a fast paced demanding business (essential)
WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?
You’ll be pleased to know we don’t pay you in ‘chips’. As well as a competitive salary we also have some ‘a-peeling’ benefits including:
* Company Car
* Achievable personal and business performance-based bonus
* Private single medical insurance scheme
* A great pension plan — and we’ll pay double what you do, up to a maximum of 12% of your pay
* Flexible holidays — with the option to buy & sell up to 5 extra days per year
* ‘Chips In’ Volunteering Day Off — to make a positive impact in McCain communities across the globe
* Optional health cash plan
* Cycle to work scheme
* Opportunities to relocate in the future — we’re a worldwide business, so the opportunities are there for those who seek them
WHERE WILL I WORK?
Our Seed Operation is based in Montrose, a town situated 38 miles north of Dundee and 42 miles south of Aberdeen, Scotland. Not only does it have the world’s best seed potato operation (our opinion but probably fact!) it’s also lined with award-winning sandy beaches, cosy pubs, and the stunning Montrose Basin Nature Reserve.
You’ll spend a lot of your time away from the office, visiting growers and crops, mostly in Scotland but from time to time in England too. There may also be the odd trip to our Experience Centre in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
